Amritsar

Historically known as Ramdaspur, Amritsar is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Punjab. It is every year visited by a large number of tourists from all around the world. Being home to the world-popular Golden temple or the Harmandir Sahib, it is one of the spiritual centres of the followers of the Sikh religion. This Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than UNESCO World Heritage Site-the Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors during weekdays alone (Source: Wikipedia). This vivacious and bustling city is also known for historical importance. This multi-cultural city is a must-visit during weekends, if you stay in Delhi. Amritsar is quite popular for its food such as Amritsart Kulche and chole, Kulfi and lassi and colourful markets selling some amazing stuff including traditional Juttis, parandis, phulkari dupattas and more. Visiting Amritsar and its nearby villages is a real cultural delight.

Important points to be note in order to visit Amritsar - Golden Temple.

  • A headscarf and your camera (it’s fine to take photos inside the temple, but not in the inner
  • temple where the book is; you can take your camera inside but you must leave it in your bag)
  • Take off your shoes before entering Golden Temple. Inside the Golden Temple chewing gum, sunglasses and photography are prohibited.
  • Do carry comfortable walking shoes

Important points to be note for visit Wagah Border Ceremony:

  • The ceremony lasts for 45 minutes and is carried out before sunset. 4:15 pm is the time during winter and 4:45 during summer. The border gate is open from 14:00 Hrs till 16:00 Hrs. However, the ceremony starts only after 4:00 pm. So if want to watch the ceremony, you have to reach the place not later than 3:00 pm. (Seats are packed on weekends and public holidays. No tickets are needed for the event.)
  • There are certain things that one should remember while visiting Wagah border. There are jammers here so no mobile phone service is available here. No covered bags are allowed, including ladies handbags or purses. 
Amritsar
